Be By Myself - Asher Roth (feat. Cee-Lo)
I’ll listen to anything with Cee-Lo, first off. Once he went solo, he entered a new musical phase, moving more towards actual singing.
But once he joined up with Danger Mouse, man took it to a new level.
Listening to that voice, there is something of the best of gospel, the best of soul, the best of R&B, all locked up in one single voice. Not perfect, not smooth, but engaging in a way that is instantly pleasing to the ears.
And here he’s basically playing the Nate Dogg role, rocking the chorus, bit of the bridge.
Which is more than enough. Because this Asher Roth kid? Not bad at all. I was skeptical, sure, an Eminem clone is by no means called for in today’s musical landscape. But he’s more relaxed, amusing in a less confrontational, more situational way.
Solid song, all the way around.
