Big Self-Portrait - Chuck Close (1967-1968 acrylic on canvas)
I will profess to being fairly ignorant when it comes to the world of art: art theory, art history, technique, movements.
I remember hearing Chuck Close’s name a lot when I was in college, mainly because he was teaching there at the time, and my friends, aspiring artists, were in awe of him.
I kept mixing him up with Chuck Jones, probably still did up until a few years ago.
And not until perhaps 7 minutes ago did I ever think to look up the man, see what the fuss was all about.
And I see this picture, this painting I have seen many times but never really looked at, this painting I always presumed was a photograph.  This painting which, in fact, is not a photograph.
And I am in awe.
