allmyfriendsarejpegs asked: Hello,

Do you ever get hassle with people who don't like your photos after you've shot them, and then don't want you to use/put them anywhere? I know that this is easily solved by a contract beforehand, but it's not really something I'd be up for doing, and even with a contract, it's more the emotional pressure than the legal stuff that's a pain.

How do you deal with these scenarios?

Actually, I don’t.  Can’t say as I’ve ever had a problem with posting photos of people.  Usually the people I shoot and I are on friendly enough terms, it’s not even an issue.  And usually I’m only posting them for personal use.

Also, I tend to post the photos before I show ‘em to my subjects.  Try that out.  Then, if the photos are popular, you’ve got yourself a good counter-argument for “oh, I don’t think I look good.”

“Lady, you look amazing, check out all these comments calling you hotter than a 2 dollar pistol on the fourth of July!”

On the rare occasion I use the photos commercially, I use release forms.  Don’t much like using those things unless I have to, gives a shoot a strange vibe, too formal? Stiffens up the whole shoot.

On the even rarer occasion I’ve taken photos of someone and we’re no longer on friendly terms, I find myself not wanting to use photos of them, anyway.

So, yeah, never show ‘em the photos until it’s too late.  That’s today’s lesson.
