The key to this? A gold reflector. I received the reflector as a birthday present from my friend Tod last year, didn’t really use it much until a few months ago, when I realized it could take care of the nasty shadows that the near-perfect LA sun tended to cause.
Which is why an assistant was so nice, because you have no idea how awkward it is to try to hold a reflector over a model while at the same time holding a camera and adjusting. Let me put it this way: balancing a reflector on your head? FAIL.
The great thing about this reflector is that it’s got a cover, which is also a reflector. And the cover is reversible. So I’ve got a diffuser, a black cover, a silver cover and a white cover. Four four four uses in one.
Now all I need is a handheld fan and a tiny flash, and I’ll have my lo-fi utility belt all set.
