Jill Greenberg just made every “celebrity” portrait photographer’s future life more miserable. As if we aren’t leashed tightly enough already. Publicists are already demanding the right to chimp and delete on set. And magazine art directors and editors are not known for the fortitude of their backbones with regards to celebrities, so this will contribute to a situation that’s going to become unworkable real quick. (that said, I agree with her politics here, and these John McCain images hit hard)
Jill Greenberg is my new hero. Mr. Cubitt’s right, it won’t make it easier for others trying to do a straight job, but I think with this shot and its un-retouched confederate, she slipped the leash of celebrity photography, into a far more potent type of art.
