Sometimes I wake up at the crack of dawn ready for anything, jumping out of bed, plowing through the morning routine, mind ablaze, a laser that will cut through steel.
Sometimes I wake up and it’s akin to climbing out of one’s own grave. Exhausted by the very act of opening my eyes.
Sometimes I’m exhausted but I’ve made plans to shoot at sunrise, across town, in less than warm weather. And I’ll go, sluggish, drive on Night of the Comet freeways, too early to drop in on any of the snack places I love. And I’ll shoot, and mumble, and direct, and grin not nearly enough.
Several hours later, well after the shoot’s all done and Katy’s back in her warm apartment, I reflect on the crisp air, the perfection of the sunrise, the glorious light I got to play around in. Several hours later, and just a bit too late.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KATY!!!!

Modeling by Myself
Thursday and Saturday I came along with Lou and a few pretty ladies and became his camera assistant. I caught some light and I shaded some faces and I traveled through the treacherous jungles of Malibu. I also caught some footage of the whole thing, which should come up during the next week, so look out for that!
Such an awesome assistant. Loads of fun having an assistant, mainly because it’s someone to bounce ideas off of, a compatriot, a partner in crime. Katy, especially, is great for this, never afraid to chime in, offer up (mostly superior) ideas, help out whenever needed.
Lady laughs a lot, too. That’s good stuff.

Katy had herself a photo shoot at my house this morning, some artsy project for film school about dead moms and dads and sons and ghosts and guys in suit jackets that get burned.
The “get burned” part I added when I put the mardi gras light too close to his arm.
He’s fine! He’s fine, don’t you worry your pretty little head about it.
But he was in shock for a few minutes. You’d think he’d never been on fire before.
I basically acted at the Grip & Electric departments for her, moved my lights around, got her the look she was going for.
Not quite Assisting, as I didn’t have to do any scut work or get coffee. So quite fun.
And of course I got to shoot Katy. Which is always a blast, not too dissimilar from shooting a cartoon character. Lady’s got personality for days.
She’s also goofy as hell. Which the camera in my hands tends to love.
Katy in the middle of the street at dawn, because that’s where I told her to be.
Both of us running to the side of the street when a car approached.
Waiting for the sun to pop up, which it never did.

Oh, don’t mind that, that’s just the pain of having a FUCKING BRIGHT/HOT LIGHT SHOVED RIGHT INTO YOUR EYEBALLS.
Katy and I had ourselves a good time, Saturday. Walked around the neighborhood with one model, marveled at the location for a second shoot, had photo fun in someone else’s kitchen, figured out how to replicate lighting situations we were shown.
I do love having me a sidekick. Makes me look less bonkers when I talk to myself.
More Katy tomorrow! She’s gonna be my assistant for a full half-day’s worth of shooting new folks in foreign situations.
Figured it best if I had someone I could trust at my side.
